Multicultural Community Forum

Event date:
October 7, 2007
1:00 pmto5:00 pm

This forum is being organised by the University of Canberra and Canberra Multicultural Community Forum Inc (CMCF), a peak body for the local multicultural community. The forum will be held from 1pm to 5pm on Sunday 7 October 2007 in Building 2, University of Canberra. The forum is free.

The forum will be an opportunity for stakeholders from all levels of formal education, from preschool to tertiary level, to meet with each other and with other individuals and groups in the Canberra region who believe in the benefits of speaking and understanding another language in addition to English.

Professor Michael Clyne, from the University of Melbourne, a linguist with expert knowledge of second language learning and immigrant bilingualism, will be a leading discussant.

The aim of the forum is to develop an action plan to promote

* An increased awareness of the importance and relevance of
languages in Canberra, especially for children and young people
* Incentives to learn, or to continue to learn, a language other
than English
* Opportunities to learn, hear and use various languages in the
Canberra region
